GST Returns are periodic statements that businesses are required to file with the tax authorities to report their GST liability. The filing of GST returns is mandatory for all businesses registered under the GST Act, and failure to file returns on time can result in penalties and fines. The purpose of GST returns is to keep a track of the tax liability of businesses, as well as to ensure that the correct amount of tax has been paid and claimed as input tax credit.

There are several types of GST returns, including:

  1. GSTR-1: This return is filed by regular taxpayers to report their outward supplies (sales) during a tax period. It is due on the 10th of the following month.

  2. GSTR-2: This return is filed by regular taxpayers to report their inward supplies (purchases) during a tax period. It is due on the 15th of the following month.

  3. GSTR-3: This return is a summary of GSTR-1 and GSTR-2 and is automatically generated by the GST portal. It is due on the 20th of the following month.

  4. GSTR-3B: This is a simplified return that is filed by all taxpayers on a monthly basis. It is due on the 20th of the following month.

  5. GSTR-4: This return is filed by composition taxpayers, who are small businesses with a turnover of up to Rs. 1.5 crores and opt for a composition scheme under GST. It is due on the 18th of the following quarter.

  6. GSTR-5: This return is filed by non-resident taxable persons, who are registered under GST for the purpose of making taxable supplies in India. It is due on the 20th of the following month.

  7. GSTR-6: This return is filed by Input Service Distributors, who are registered under GST for the purpose of distributing input tax credit to their branches. It is due on the 13th of the following month.

  8. GSTR-7: This return is filed by taxpayers who are required to deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) under GST. It is due on the 10th of the following month.

  9. GSTR-8: This return is filed by e-commerce operators who are required to collect TCS (Tax Collected at Source) under GST. It is due on the 10th of the following month.

In summary, GST returns are a crucial part of the GST compliance process, as they provide a record of the tax liability of businesses and help ensure that the correct amount of tax is paid and claimed. It is important for businesses to file their returns on time and maintain accurate records to avoid penalties and fines.
