A team leader and a SME (subject matter expert) differ significantly in a few important ways. First off, a SME is usually more of a individual contributor than a leader. They are frequently consulted on tasks or activities that call for their area of expertise since they are the specialist in that field.

On the other hand, a team leader is in charge of managing a group of individuals. Although they might not be the most knowledgeable in every field, they must be able to effectively communicate and assign duties in order to complete the work.

Whereas a team leader needs to be more focused on the big picture and the team's objectives, a SME is typically more focused on the technical parts of their work. An SME might be able to instruct you on how to construct a single product component, but a team leader must be able to grasp the larger picture and ensure that every component is working toward the same objective.

And finally, a team leader may possess more general management skills than a SME in terms of knowledge and experience.

What distinguishes a team leader from a SME, then? A team leader is in charge of directing and coordinating a team of people toward a shared objective, whereas a SME is more of an individual contributor with specific technical knowledge.

Hope this helps! 😊
